Breen-Phillips and Farley in morning light is one of my favorite views on campus. The long view of the golden dome, looking west, was beautifully conceived. All of the facades of the most important buildings on campus(dome, church, library, football stadium) all face south…a classical idea…to capture the most sun. I could not find proof of my theory that the construction of Farley in 1947 was delayed by the war, but I think it’s true. Its near twin, Breen-Phillips, was built in 1939 by the donation of alumni and brother-in-laws William Breen and Frank Philips, housed Naval officers in training during the war. The Athletic Department was in the basement in the1950’s…so that was where you’d find Frank Leahy! Both dorms became women’s residences in 1972.
Farley is named after the Rev. John “Pop” Farley, an alumnus and beloved rector. Every January the residents host a Pop Farley week, full of parties, dances, skits and fundraising. It includes a midnight walk to the resting place of Pop Farley.
I highly recommend a visit to Holy Cross Cemetery the next time you are on campus. It’s a beautiful walk…and there is always a new story to discover. Now I know why I often have seen a party hat left on the headstone Rev. John “Pop” Farley!
