Some of my favorite photos of California surf culture are the early ones from the early ’40’s when the long wooden boards were in the long wooden cars. All the beaches were pristine and empty except for the beautiful Woodies and the surfers. The innocence of their life is almost heartbreaking because most of them were fighting in WW2 within a year. I paint Woodies as an icon the innocence of beach culture. But I’m in love with how beautiful they are as well.
